A Brief Brain Blog in Time #2

31st August 2021

Interestingly ruminating about the future or past is not that useful but many humans do it. A lot of philosophy including Stoic, Zen and modern scientific “mindfulness” points to giving your attention to the moment that exists now, as it is the only thing you can control. This release of stress, mind activity and surrender to your current situation brings about stillness and a clearer perspective of the actions that need taken.

It can even help bring about clarity on emotions arising within yourself or others. When intensely focusing on the present this can let you dissociate from negative states and emotions and lets you view your own brains output, the constant stream of mind activity from an external perspective. Actions that come out of you from this state will probably be from a deeper sense of purpose and intuition rather than pure reactivity to the situation. This is something more easily grasped using the right hemisphere of the brain compared to the analytical left.
